Emerald Dragon

  • Odroid C2 compact single board computer
  • 1.5GHz Amlogic ARM Cortex-A53 64-bit quad-core processor
  • 2 GB DDR3 SDRAM
  • 16 GB eMMC solid state drive (boot)
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • UPS3 3,000 mAh Lithium battery backup.

Background

The Emerald Dragon is our Domain Name Server (DNS) and e-mail server located in the offics of Zen's shop—Rockford Steam Boiler in Roscoe, Illinois.

Name

The Emerald Dragon received its name in honner of Zen. The emerald is his birth stone as well as the color of character Zendor for whom Zen's handle is derived. Zen has graciously hosted DrQue.net since 2011.

History

The Emerald Dragon was commissioned in April of 2017 after the catastrophic hardware failure of the Micro-Dragon. It will take over the DNS and e-mail operations the Micro-Dragon use to handle.

The selection of the Odroid C2 was made after the successes of the Odroid U3 powering the Sun Dragon. The Micro Dragon was designed to be a low-power system and at the time it was commissioned the 20 watt server was extremely low-power for its speed. With ARM processors designed with cellphone and tablet markets in mind low-power high-speed processors have progressed a great deal. The power requirements of the C2 are a fraction of the Micro Dragon.

Since the web server functions of the Micro Dragon were not needed, storage wasn't a concern for the Emerald Dragon. A single 16 GB eMMC card is plenty to provide storage to the system. At 1.5 GHz and 4 CPU cores the C2 has plenty of computing power. Since power failures are fairly common at the site a battery shield was also added. The battery should be able to provide several hours of power.
